This course is offered through the University of Connecticut’s Early College Experience (ECE) program and
provides eligible students with the opportunity to earn college credit. Principles of Macroeconomics is a
fast-paced, college-level course examining the economy as a whole. Students explore economic theories
and their real-world applications, beginning with decision-making, trade-offs, opportunity costs,
production possibilities, and comparative and absolute advantage. The course focuses on aggregate supply
and demand, real GDP, economic growth, full employment, price stability, and the business cycle. Students
analyze economic indicators such as GDP, unemployment, labor force participation, and inflation. They
also examine fiscal and monetary policy, including government spending, taxation, the multiplier effect,
interest rates, money creation, and the role of the Federal Reserve. Additional topics include the national
debt, crowding out, income distribution, international trade, exchange rates, and the global economy.
Through case studies, current events, and economic debates, students evaluate economic conditions and
develop an understanding of their roles as consumers, producers, and citizens.
